DIAGRAM Working with Association of American Publishers on EPUB 3 Standards
As we mentioned last month in the July 2013 Standards Update, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) has launched an EPUB 3 Implementation Project to establish EPUB 3 as the standard global distribution format for eBooks. The timeline is aggressive. Some publishers “anticipate introducing large numbers of EPUB 3 files into the marketplace beginning First Quarter 2014,” according to the press release.
Benetech and DIAGRAM members are heavily involved four of the five working groups related to the AAP’s initiative so that accessibility is a consideration in all of them. Anh Bui, Robin Seaman, Suzy Haines, George Kerscher, Geoff Freed, and many others are involved in several meetings per week leading up to a daylong workshop on September 10th in New York City. Many hours have been devoted to defining and prioritizing a long list of accessibility elements for the standard. Here is just a sampling of the initiatives underway:
- The DIAGRAM Standards Working Group is preparing its recommendation for publishers about what markup to use for image descriptions.
- The DIAGRAM Content Working Group is preparing an Accessible Images Sample Book that will allow publishers to see examples of accessible images in context, along with the code required to create them. Several chapters from the book-in-progress are expected to be ready in time for the September 10th meeting.
- Benetech is working on an Accessibility Metadata project that if implemented will allow users to find accessible materials using a simple Google search.
Very many thanks to all the DIAGRAM folks who participated in our survey and helped inform the discussion of priorities. Your input has been shared with the Accessibility Working Group. We appreciate the opportunity to be so intimately involved in the planning for establishing these important new standards. Carpe diem!!
