October 2013 Standards Update
ARIA 1.1 and EPUB 3.01
Submitted by Geoff Freed
Work continues at the W3C on ARIA 1.1, the version that will contain the new property aria-describedat. ARIA 1.1 remains in FPWD (first public working draft) status, and will remain in that state for some time as the working group continues to refine the new recommendation. Meanwhile, Matt Garish has written an excellent summary of aria-describedat, its potential uses and what other long-description delivery methods are available today while authors wait for aria-describedat to be finished and, eventually, supported by screen readers, browsers and reading systems (all of which will take some time). In other news, George Kerscher reports that EPUB 3.01 is being finalized for Member IP review in preparation for the approval of this specification. In the last days of the EPUB 3.01 developments, Aria 1.01 was produced as a draft release, and the EPUB spec included the use of aria-describedat.
