December 2013 DIAGRAM Training & Outreach Update
Next DIAGRAM Webinar: Accessible Image Sample Book
The DIAGRAM Center’s Content Working Group, co-chaired by Elaine Ober (Pearson) and Lucia Hasty (Rocky Mountain Braille Associates), has been hard at work in 2013 developing the forthcoming Accessible Images Sample Book (AISB). The AISB will be a free online resource that shows what some of the many options are for creating accessible versions of digital images such as maps, bar charts, diagrams, mathematical expressions, photographs, and more. Each of the seven chapters shows a different complex image in context of the book it came from, along with helpful tips and the code used to provide the accessible image in a digital book. See (and hear!) the different ways that an image can be made accessible, including: short and long descriptions, tactile graphics, MathML, sonification, audio description, and 3D printing. The next DIAGRAM webinar will introduce the AISB, including a tour of what it contains and suggestions for how you might use it. The date will be announced in January 2014. In the meantime, please visit the DIAGRAM Webinars web page for links to past webinars, slide sets, and FAQs.
Outreach Working Group Update
The DIAGRAM Outreach Working Group met on December 16, 2013 to discuss updates from DIAGRAM about the web site refresh (coming soon!) and from WG members on 3D tactile graphics, electrostatic haptics, and tablets for the blind. We discussed recommended outreach to people and organizations that could benefit from using DIAGRAM-developed tools such the forthcoming Accessible Images Sample Book. See the full notes from the Outreach WG meeting on our wiki site. As always, don’t hesitate to contact Outreach Working Group Chair Julie Noblitt at julien [at] benetech [dot] org if you would like more information or have ideas for discussion at our next quarterly meeting.
