January 2014 Standards Update
@longdesc Specification Moves to Full W3C Recommendation
Submitted by Geoff Freed
The WAI Protocols and Formats (PF) working group recently proposed a resolution to move the current @longdesc extension specification to a full W3C recommendation and to keep it separate from the full HTML 5 specification. This resolution was approved on January 29. Maintaining @longdesc apart from the HTML5 specification does not place the attribute in danger. Instead, keeping it separate helps avoid the conflicts over its use that have arisen in the past. Meanwhile, note that the new property for providing descriptions for images and other elements, aria-describedat, continues on its development track in ARIA 1.1, which is currently a first public working draft.
