New NCAM eBook: How to Create Accessible iBooks Textbooks
Submitted by Geoff Freed

The Carl and Ruth Shapiro National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) at WGBH has published a complete set of guidelines for authors who want to use Apple’s iBooks Author to create accessible iBooks textbooks. “Creating Accessible iBooks Textbooks with iBooks Author” provides detailed information on all the steps necessary to assemble and publish accessible Multi-Touch materials, from the use of source documents through testing with VoiceOver, the screen reader that comes with iOS and OS X operating systems. Topics include:

  • an overview of accessibility and electronic publications
  • the role of structure in source documents
  • how to add descriptions to images, charts and shapes
  • adding accessibility features to iBooks widgets, such as image galleries, media clips, mathematical expressions, review questions and more
  • testing your iBooks textbook with VoiceOver on iPad

While the primary aim of the book is to show how to take advantage of all that iBooks Author has to offer in terms of accessibility support, it also serves as a showcase for these features. With demonstrations of accessible images, media, review questions, interactive images, structure and math, readers can see, hear and test an accessible iBooks textbook themselves.

“Creating Accessible iBooks Textbooks with iBooks Author” is available for free from the iTunes store at https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/creating-accessible-ibooks/id569179589?ls=1 .
